Kevin Devine was in the post-punk band Miracle of '86, a reference to his favorite baseball team, the New York Mets.
Before relocating to Brooklyn, he was part of the Staten Island indie scene with the Realistics and Awek (both of which included members of the indie-folk band Pablo).
The singer-songwriter-guitarist graduated from Fordham University in 2001 with a degree in journalism.

Any pressure in being "indie" on a major?
There are always expectations to perform well. [But] I'm probably the last one anyone's expecting to land a Top 10 single.
Velvet Revolver or current Guns N' Roses?
G N' R, because even fat, Botoxed, 'Predator'- haired Axl still beats everyone for sheer lunacy.
If you played baseball, steroids or no?
Nope. I was always a fan of the scrappy underdog. Also, no penis-shrinking drugs for me, either.
