Canaries in a Coalmine

Formed during the mid-'70s punk explosion in England, the Police were slightly older and far more experienced than most of their contemporaries. Singer-bassist Gordon Sumner, born in 1951, was an ex-schoolteacher who got his world-famous nickname, Sting, when he wore a black-and-yellow-striped jersey to a gig for one of his early jazz bands, the Phoenix Jazzmen.
